What video format should I use?
MP4 with the H.264 codec, unless you have a specific reason not to. It plays everywhere, every platform accepts it, and the compression is good enough that the file size rarely becomes the problem. Reach for H.265 when you are delivering 4K and need smaller files, WebM when the video lives on your own website, and ProRes or MOV only while you are still editing.
What is the difference between a format and a codec?
The format is the container, such as MP4, MOV, or WebM, and it holds the video, the audio, and the metadata together. The codec is the compression method used on the video inside that container, such as H.264, H.265, VP9, or AV1. Two MP4 files can behave completely differently depending on which codec is inside them, which is why an MP4 that plays on one device sometimes fails on another.
What resolution should I export video at?
Export at 1080p for most social and web delivery, and at 4K only when the platform supports it and the footage was actually shot at 4K. Upscaling a 1080p master to 4K adds file size without adding detail. Vertical video for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts should be 1080 by 1920.
Why does my video look worse after uploading?
Every platform re-encodes what you upload, so your file is compressed a second time on top of your own export. Give the platform more to work with by exporting at a higher bitrate than feels necessary, keeping the resolution native rather than upscaled, and avoiding heavy grain or fast motion in the first seconds, which is where compression artifacts show worst.
Is H.265 better than H.264?
H.265 produces roughly half the file size at the same visual quality, which matters for 4K and HDR delivery. It also needs more processing power to encode and decode, and older devices and some browsers still cannot play it. For anything going to a broad audience, H.264 remains the safer choice.
What frame rate should I shoot and export at?
Match your export frame rate to your source. Shoot and export at 24 or 25 fps for a cinematic look, 30 fps for most social and web video, and 60 fps only for motion-heavy content like gaming or sport. Converting between frame rates introduces judder, so decide before the shoot rather than in the edit.
