How to write a video ad script
Every script the generator produces follows the same five beats, because it is the structure that survives contact with a paid feed. The timings below are for a 30 second ad. Scale them proportionally for 15, 60, or 90 seconds, and cut beats from the middle rather than shortening the hook.
- 1
Hook0 to 3 seconds
Stop the scroll. Lead with the pain point, a bold claim, or an unexpected image. If the hook fails, nothing after it gets watched, so write this line last and rewrite it most.
- 2
Problem3 to 8 seconds
Name the frustration in the viewer's own words. Specific beats clever here: the viewer should recognize their own situation rather than admire the writing.
- 3
Solution8 to 18 seconds
Show the product doing the thing, not a person describing the thing. Demonstration outperforms description on every platform we run.
- 4
Proof18 to 25 seconds
One concrete credibility signal: a number, a before and after, a review on screen. One is enough, and stacking three reads as insecurity.
- 5
Call to action25 to 30 seconds
Say the single next step out loud and show it on screen at the same time. Two actions compete with each other and both lose.
A 30 second video ad script example
The same five beats written out for a desk cable organizer, with the spoken line and the on-screen action side by side. Roughly 75 words, which is what 30 seconds buys you at a natural speaking pace.
| Time | Beat | Script |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 | Hook | Visual: hands wrestling a tangled charging cable. Voiceover: "Every desk has this drawer." |
| 0:03 | Problem | Voiceover: "Six cables, four devices, and you still can't find the one you need." |
| 0:08 | Solution | Visual: cables clicking into the organizer one by one. Voiceover: "One dock. Everything charges, everything stays put." |
| 0:18 | Proof | On screen: "4.8 stars, 12,000 reviews." Voiceover: "Twelve thousand people cleared the drawer." |
| 0:25 | Call to action | On screen: product and price. Voiceover: "Tap to clear yours this week." |
Script length and hook window by platform
The structure holds everywhere. What changes is how long you have before the viewer leaves, and what the first line has to do.
| Platform | Script length | Hook window | What to lead with |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 15 to 30 seconds | 1 to 2 seconds | Native, creator-style delivery. Lead with the problem spoken to camera. |
| Instagram Reels | 15 to 30 seconds | 1 to 3 seconds | Polished but handheld. Lead with a visual transformation. |
| YouTube Shorts | 20 to 45 seconds | 2 to 3 seconds | Slightly more setup tolerated. Lead with a question the video answers. |
| Facebook feed | 30 to 60 seconds | 3 seconds | Assume sound off. Lead with on-screen text and captions throughout. |
| YouTube in-stream | 30 to 90 seconds | 5 seconds | Earn the skip. Front-load the payoff before the 5 second mark. |
